Adapted to Roar: Functional Morphology of Tiger and Lion Vocal Folds
Vocal production requires active control of the respiratory system, larynx and vocal tract. Vocal sounds in mammals are produced by flow-induced vocal fold oscillation, which requires vocal fold tissue that can sustain the mechanical stress during phonation. Our understanding of the relationship between morphology and vocal function of vocal folds is very limited. Here we tested the hypothesis ...
متن کاملFreedom's roar.
editorial editorial t he year 2011 has thus far been marked by a wave of revolutions, sparked by the desire of oppressed people all over the world—notably the arab world—for freedom and democracy. Some dictatorships have fallen, whilst others have trained their guns on their own people , in a vain attempt to postpone the day of reckoning for their regimes. But, lest we delude ourselves that rea...
متن کاملSelf-trapping and stable localized modes in nonlinear photonic crystals.
We predict the existence of stable nonlinear localized modes near the band edge of a two-dimensional reduced-symmetry photonic crystal with a Kerr nonlinearity. Employing the technique based on the Green function, we reveal a physical mechanism of the mode stabilization associated with the effective nonlinear dispersion and long-range interaction in the photonic crystals.
متن کاملObservations of lion roars in the magnetosheath by the STAFF/DWP experiment on the Double Star TC-1 spacecraft
Lion roars are intense, short duration packets of whistler mode waves, observed in the magnetosheath. They are typically seen coincident with the magnetic field minima of mirror mode waves. The orbit of the Double Star TC1 spacecraft (570 km by 78 970 km, inclination at 28.5 degrees) is ideal for observations of lion roars as the spacecraft is in the magnetosheath more than 50% of the time when...
متن کاملHigher order microfibre modes for dielectric particle trapping and propulsion
Optical manipulation in the vicinity of optical micro- and nanofibres has shown potential across several fields in recent years, including microparticle control, and cold atom probing and trapping. To date, most work has focussed on the propagation of the fundamental mode through the fibre. However, along the maximum mode intensity axis, higher order modes have a longer evanescent field extensi...
